Nabua — bi-scriptural typeface

Nabua is a Latin/Baybayin bi-scriptural typeface designed for body copy, developed through research into pre-colonial handwriting, carved letterforms, and contemporary type design practice.

Early process spread documenting Baybayin skeleton development, informed by archival manuscripts, contemporary handwriting, and flat-nib experiments.

stroke logic & material experiments

To recover a working skeleton for Baybayin, the project combines archival references with material experiments — carving, engraving, and printing on wood — to reveal how the script behaves when written, etched, and reproduced at different scales.

Latin + Baybayin in use

The Latin and Baybayin cuts share a common rhythm — x-height, contrast, and spacing are adjusted so mixed-script text reads as a single voice rather than two unrelated faces. Optical sizes are tuned for long-form reading and display.
